چکیده

In this study, we performed ecotoxicity tests of sodium arsenite on soil invertebrate Eisenia fetida. Initially, broad range of sodium arsenite (0.1, 1, 10, 100mg/ml) was tested for mortality of E. fetida after 24 hours in filter paper test. The narrow range doses (0-1mg/ml) were further tested to determine the EC50 and LD50. The EC50 dose of sodium arsenite was considered at which 50% of earthworms exhibited rejection to the spot on filter paper in the spot rejection test. The LD50 of sodium arsenite resulting in mortality in 50% of Eisenia fetida was studied with contact filter paper bioassay (24hrs) and soil bioassay (14 days). In the range finding test, there was no mortality in control and 0.1mg/ml but 100% mortality was observed at doses of 1mg and above after 24 hours. Thus, for further study smaller doses intervals in the range between 0-1mg/ml was selected for spot rejection, contact filter paper and soil bioassay. The percent mortality in each test was computed and was subjected to regression analysis to get a linear dose response curve and estimation of EC50 and LD50. The EC50 was estimated as 0.3mg/ml of sodium arsenite concentration to Eisenia fetida. The 24hrsLD50 was estimated as 0.4mg/cm in filter paper and 14 days -LD50 as 5mg/kg in soil bioassay. Thus it can be concluded that Eisenia fetida exhibit sign of toxicity in environmental soils which are containing 1mg/kg and higher doses of sodium arsenite.

Short Communication AVOIDANCE, WEIGHT LOSS, AND COCOON PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT FOR EISENIA FETIDA EXPOSED TO C60 IN SOIL

Eisenia fetida was used as a model terrestrial organism to assess the potential ecotoxicity of molecular pristine C60 in soil. Reproduction (assessed by counting cocoon numbers) was hindered only at very high C60 concentrations (5% by weight), and C60 (up to 1%) was not avoided and did not hinder earthworm growth. This suggests that E. fetida is unlikely to experience acute toxicity as a result...

Modeling zinc toxicity for terrestrial invertebrates.

Acute and chronic ecotoxicity tests with zinc were performed with the earthworm Eisenia fetida, the potworm Enchytraeus albidus, and the springtail Folsomia candida. To assess the influence of the soil type on zinc toxicity for these soil invertebrates, these tests were carried out in a standard artificial soil, a sandy and a loamy field soil. Based on the results of this experimental work and ...

Acute ecotoxicity of creosote-contaminated soils to Eisenia fetida: a survival-based approach.

Quantification of risks to the ecosystem is necessary for cost-effective remediation strategies. Contaminant endpoints need to be established that consider the bioavailability of toxicants in soil. The challenge is to develop methods that assign risk to the bioavailable toxic contaminants, thereby protecting ecosystems, while balancing remediation costs. Our objective was to evaluate changes in...

Potential utilization of bagasse as feed material for earthworm Eisenia fetida and production of vermicompost

In the present work bagasse (B) i.e waste of the sugar industry, was fed to Eisenia fetida with cattle dung (CD) support as feed material at various ratios (waste: CD) of 0:100 (B0), 25:75 (B25), 50:50 (B50), 75:25 (B75) and 100:0 (B100) on dry weight basis. Co-composting with cattle dung helped to improve their acceptability for E. fetida and also improved physico-chemical characteristics. Bes...

Earthworm toxicity during chemical oxidation of diesel-contaminated sand.

An ecotoxicity test with Eisenia fetida was performed to monitor the removal of diesel and toxicity variation during the ozonation process. The three-dimensional (3-D) cell test was introduced for the monitoring of the ozonation process, and the removal rate based on total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) mass was about 95% near the ozone inlet ports. This high removal rate might be caused by the ...
